At the heart of Past & Present lies the extraordinary rarity of Rose, sourced directly from the vault of Sultan Qaboos of Oman. These roses, known for their unparalleled fragrance, have been aging for decades under the careful stewardship of the Sultan himself. This aging process in the controlled environs of the royal vault has allowed the roses to develop a depth and complexity that cannot be found in freshly harvested flowers. The scent of these aged roses is profoundly rich, with hints of a gorgeous lychee note that pops out.

Adding to the exclusivity of this fragrance is the deer musk pod, also sourced from Sultan Qaboos's vault. Like the roses, this musk has been aging for decades, enhancing its potency and melding its deep, animalic notes with the subtler, floral nuances of the aged roses. The combination creates a base that is both intoxicating and endlessly fascinating, offering a scent that is truly one of a kind.

To juxtapose the aged notes and inject a burst of vibrancy, Past & Present incorporates an array of fresh roses. Turkish Rose Otto brings a spicy, almost tangy quality to the composition, while Bulgarian Rose Absolute offers a honeyed depth that enriches the heart. Bulgarian Rose Otto adds a green, fresh dimension, and Rose de Mai contributes a light, almost honeyed quality to the blend. These freshly distilled essences serve to brighten the deep tones of the aged roses, creating a dynamic interplay between past and present breathing new life into the fragrance.

Enhancing the top notes and adding a sparkle to the blend, White Ambergris has been carefully selected. This rare ingredient, known for its ability to refine and elevate the other notes, imparts a marine, slightly animalic brightness that enhances the floral bouquet, making the top notes shimmer with an almost celestial quality.

In the base, Sandalwood provides a creamy, soft foundation that not only complements the deep musk and floral accords but also strengthens the fragrance's longevity. Its warm, milky, and rich woodiness grounds the scent, allowing the luxurious bouquet of roses and the ancient musk to linger beautifully on the skin.

Completing this olfactory journey is a rare ingredient that introduces an exotic, wild allure to Past & Present—Vietnamese Oud. Known for its incredible quality, this oud features a distinct profile with its ant bite quality that contributes a uniquely intense character. Purchasing this oud was no easy task on its own, we sourced the oud chips ourselves and went for the best of the best. The scent profile of this Vietnamese Oud is marked by sweet honey and vanilla-like notes that contrast beautifully with the deeper, earthy rosey undertones of the fragrance. This Oud was masterfully distilled by our friends over at Olefaktory, an incredible american distiller enhancing this already amazing oud.

Past & Present is a luxurious blend of the rarest ingredients that have been bestowed with the gift of time. This perfume appeals to those who appreciate the depth of history and the freshness of the present, encapsulating both in a bottle and of course for all those rose lovers out there. Wearing it is like carrying a piece of history, enriched by the touch of the present. It is an homage to all that has been and a toast to what will be, making Past & Present a timeless choice for those who want to wear a story on their skin.

OUR ALL NATURAL

Our Process

  • Step 1: Sourcing Materials from Sultan Qaboos of Oman’s Treasury

The initial, and perhaps most challenging, phase involved sourcing the exceptionally rare and aged ingredients from the treasury of Sultan Qaboos of Oman.

    - Acquiring Materials: This involved constant searching for the ingredients for just about a year. At first only finding a tiny bit and eventually finding enough for a full batch! Not to mention the drastic price increase of all these materials since the last release because of its scarcity.

    - Aged Ingredients: The main attractions were the decades-old rose essences and a rare deer musk pod, noted for their unparalleled quality and depth of aroma. These ingredients had been aging in carefully controlled conditions, which enriched their natural fragrances and made them unique to the Sultan’s collection.

  • Step 2: Formulating and Blending

With the rare ingredients secured, the next step was to create a fragrance that could seamlessly blend the historical essences with contemporary scents:

    - Creating the Formula: I began by developing several iterations, balancing the potent historical scents with modern essences. The aged rose oils and musk were complemented with fresh floral notes from Turkish rose otto, Bulgarian rose absolute, and Rose de Mai to revitalize their venerable qualities.

    - Refining the Blend: The blending process was iterative, with numerous adjustments to ensure that the new ingredients enhanced rather than overpowered the aged scents. The goal was to create a perfect harmony that embodied both the past and the present.

    - Adding Depth and Complexity: White ambergris and Sandalwood were incorporated to enhance the fragrance's sparkle and provide a lasting foundation, ensuring the scent's longevity and complexity.

  • Step 3: Maturation and Bottling

The final stage involved the aging, maturation, and bottling of the fragrance, crucial for developing its full aromatic profile:

    - Aging the Blend: Once blended, the fragrance was allowed to age for several more months. This maturation process is critical for allowing the different components to meld together fully, enhancing the overall depth and richness of the scent.

    - Quality Assurance: After aging, the fragrance underwent extensive quality assurance tests to ensure that the batch maintained the highest standard of fragrance quality and that the notes remained consistent and true to the envisioned scent profile.

    - Bottling and Presentation: Finally, Past & Present was carefully bottled in elegantly designed containers that reflected the luxury and exclusivity of the perfume.

Our Ingredients

Turkish Rose Otto

This luxurious essential oil blends deep, intensely floral notes with dense green undertones. Subtle peppery nuances add a hint of spice, enhancing the rose's natural fragrance with a sophisticated complexity. This combination creates a rich, earthy, and slightly edgy scent profile.

Sultan Qaboos Rose

What sets this rose oil apart are the subtle fruity nuances that emerge amidst its floral dominion, particularly the hints of lychee. These light, sweet fruity notes lend a modern twist to the classic rose scent, adding an exotic, slightly tropical layer that brightens the overall fragrance. The lychee component contributes a fresh juiciness that complements the deep rose base, making the scent more complex and intriguing. This Rose Oil also benefits from an aging process that intensifies its floral core. As the oil matures, it develops a deeper, more concentrated rose scent that is both lush and resonant.

Our Quality Speaks For Itself

Fact 1

Roses are not only prized for their beauty and scent but also for their remarkable age. The rose is one of the oldest flowers in cultivation, with fossils dating back about 35 million years. In historical terms, roses have been a part of human culture for thousands of years, being cultivated in ancient civilizations across the world, from China to Egypt and Rome. The ancient Romans were particularly fond of roses, using them for decoration, medicinal purposes, and lavish celebrations. They even believed that anything said "under the rose" was deemed to be confidential. This historical connection has made the rose a symbol of love, secrecy, and beauty that transcends cultures and generations, making it a truly timeless flower.

Fact 2

Ambergris originates as a secretion from the intestines of sperm whales, and it has historically been one of the most valuable raw materials in perfumery. What makes ambergris particularly intriguing is how it forms and is found. Initially, it is soft and has a fecal smell, hardly something you would associate with luxury. However, after years of floating in the ocean, it hardens and develops a sweet, earthy scent as it oxidizes under the sun.

The rarity of ambergris and its unique scent profile come from the fact that it is naturally produced by only a small percentage of sperm whales, and it must be aged by the ocean for years, sometimes decades, to develop its prized qualities. Once washed ashore, ambergris can fetch extremely high prices on the market, particularly the older, well-aged pieces.
