At the core of Gotham lies the daring inclusion of muskrat, a choice that pays tribute to the raw, untamed energy of the urban wilderness. This rare essence adds a deeply animalic yet subtly salty note, mirroring the unpredictable nature of Gotham City itself. The muskrat's natural musk is enriched with a veil of white ambergris, lending the fragrance an air of mystery with its warm, marine complexity.

Our Process

  • Step 1: the concept phase

    Gotham, the city that is filled with life and chaos, good and bad. Muskrat was the obvious choice for this scent given its animalic strength as well as the correlation between cities and rodents. However, this rodent shouldnt be feared like its pestilent cousin but rather cherished. Saffron was used to show the darkness at the city's core. It's dark leather qualities compliment the theme.

  • Step 2: expansion phase

    Opposites always attract so we had to inject some light into this darkness. Bergamot, Rose, Iris, and Lavender all help to boost this heavy scent. For depth I used black pepper and coriander seed further enhancing the darkness while making it more opulent.

  • Step 3: Finalizing

    Muskrat while not being fecal is a very powerful animalic. This last step was focused on smoothing out some of the rough edges from it. Touches of vanilla and dark labdanum tame the beast while allowing its power to be felt.

Saffron

Saffron, often hailed as one of the most precious spices in the world, offers a scent that is as complex and nuanced as its history. Derived from the dried stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, saffron exudes a unique aroma that is both aromatic and sophisticated. The primary characteristic of saffron's scent is a rich, earthy warmth, which is sweet yet slightly pungent. It has a distinctive leathery quality, often described as having honey-like notes mixed with the aroma of dry hay or grass. These earthy notes are accented by a subtle bitterness and a soft, floral undertone, adding a layer of complexity.

Rosewood

Rosewood oil, derived from the wood of the rosewood tree, is cherished in perfumery for its warm, sweet, and woody aroma. This essential oil has a delicate floral scent with a spicy yet slightly powdery undertone, making it both comforting and sophisticated. The primary notes of rosewood are deep and richly woody, complemented by a subtle floral character that is often compared to the softness of roses, hence the name. It also exhibits hints of fruitiness that add a layer of complexity and freshness to its profile. This combination creates a soothing, almost balmy quality.

Black Pepper

Black pepper, one of the world's most ubiquitous spices, offers a scent that is surprisingly complex and vibrant. The essential oil derived from the peppercorns of the Piper nigrum plant provides a fragrance that is both sharp and warming, embodying a pungent and crisp spiciness that is distinctive and invigorating. The primary aroma of black pepper is intensely spicy and slightly woody, with a dry, robust quality that immediately catches the senses. This potent spiciness is accompanied by subtle earthy notes, adding depth and richness to its profile. Black pepper also exhibits hints of a fresh, almost green undertone, which can lend a certain brightness to its otherwise bold and assertive scent.
