Polaris begins with a luminous burst of Bergamot, its bright citrus aroma sparkling like the first light of evening stars. Accompanied by the crisp, invigorating presence of Lime and High Elevation Lavender, the introduction is both refreshing and uplifting, setting a pristine and airy tone. Camphor adds a unique, slightly medicinal note that clears the mind, much like the cold, clear air under a starlit sky. As Polaris unfolds, it reveals a floral heart where Lotus and Gardenia dance together in harmonious splendor. These central notes are like the constellation’s core, bright and pulsating with life. The aquatic, serene quality of Lotus blends seamlessly with the deep, almost intoxicating aroma of Gardenia, creating a mesmerizing effect. Surrounding them are touches of Geranium and Rose, each adding their own nuances of floral greenness and creamy sweetness, respectively. This bouquet is enriched by Orris, which imparts a powdery, slightly woody undertone, contributing an earthy richness that grounds the floral exuberance.

Elemi and Fragonia introduce a resinous, slightly spicy aspect to the heart, their complexity. Blue Cypress injects a woody aroma, enhancing the blend with its calming and grounding properties.

In the base lies the true treasure of Polaris — White Ambergris and Black Mysore Sandalwood. White Ambergris, with its warm, musky, and slightly aquatic depth, offers a sublime refinement that enhances the longevity and sillage of the fragrance. Our Process

A little insight to the creation of Polaris
How did I come up with Polaris?
Putting together a collab composition from scratch.

  • Step 1: the concept phase.

    Polaris started from a specific scene in my mind. Standing in the middle of a cool clear night in a grassy forest meadow, surrounded by long dewy grass, flowers, mossy trees and overgrowth. Staring up at the stars in a moment of self reflection. How do I capture that feel? That scent?

  • Step 2: the design phase.

    With the scene in mind I started with the notes I wanted to focus on: lavender as the primary floral, sandalwood and oakmoss for the mossy trees, vetiver for the grass, citrus for for some freshness and ambergris for the dewy depth. Oud and musk were considered, but decided against because I felt they didn't add the right feel to the scene I was trying to convey. Other notes were penned in then removed, but I realized I wanted to give Polaris something a bit unique to natural perfumery: some sparkle to represent the twinkling stars. And that's where the elemi came in.

  • Step 3: Implementation

    Once I got the notes dialed in, which notes I wanted at the fore and which I wanted in supporting roles, it was time to find my perfumer. Early on in the design phase, I must admit, once I really got into it I'd realized I already had a perfumer in mind for this. I even left a "hole" in the composition for him to fill because I trust his instincts with florals much more than my own. A line in the notes actually reads "lotus/floral blend" because I gave him full creative license on filling that role. All that was left was to reach out and see if he was interested.

Our Ingredients

Lavender

Lavender is celebrated for its distinctive and soothing scent, characterized by a clean, floral, and slightly herbaceous aroma. This classic fragrance is both refreshing and calming. The primary scent of lavender is floral and sweet, but it also carries a fresh, green undertone that is reminiscent of freshly cut grass or a crisp spring morning. There’s a subtle woodiness to it as well, which adds depth and richness to its lighter notes. Lavender’s aroma is often described as slightly camphoraceous, which gives it a cooling, almost minty aspect.Overall, lavender’s fragrance is quintessentially comforting and balancing, evoking the serene landscapes of lavender fields swaying gently in the breeze. It's a scent that can transport the mind to a state of peace and provide a respite from the chaos of everyday life.

Camphor

Camphor is a distinctive aromatic compound that presents a bold and penetrating scent, noted for its cool, minty, and slightly medicinal qualities. Derived from the wood of the camphor tree, camphor is characterized by its sharp, clean aroma that can clear the sinuses and invigorate the senses.The scent of camphor is often compared to that of eucalyptus and menthol, featuring a pungent, almost piercing freshness that is unmistakable. It has a cooling effect on the skin and in the air, making it highly valued in medicinal and therapeutic products such as ointments, inhalants, and balms designed to relieve muscle pain, improve respiratory function, and soothe irritation.

Vetiver

Vetiver is a complex and alluring fragrance note, derived from the roots of the tropical vetiver grass, native to India. Known for its depth and earthiness, vetiver's scent is often described as woody, smoky, and slightly sweet, with balsamic and musky undertones. The primary characteristic of vetiver is its deep, rich earthiness, reminiscent of damp soil after a rain. It exudes a raw, robust aroma that is grounding and comforting. Vetiver also has subtle hints of greenness, which adds freshness and vibrancy to its heavy earth profile. These green notes can evoke the scent of fresh vegetation and the outdoors, bringing a naturalistic and organic quality to the fragrance.

Oakmoss

Oakmoss is a fascinating fragrance ingredient, derived from a type of lichen that grows on the bark of oak trees. It is highly valued for its rich, earthy, and deeply mossy scent, which serves as a cornerstone in many chypre fragrances. The scent of oakmoss is complex and multifaceted. It exudes a deep, forest-like aroma that is both damp and woodsy, reminiscent of the forest floor after rain. This natural earthiness is accompanied by a distinctively sharp and almost leathery quality, which adds depth and intensity to its profile. Oakmoss also carries subtle hints of green and musky notes, which contribute to its rich and robust character.

Lime

Lime offers a vibrant and zesty fragrance that is both refreshing and energizing. Its scent is sharp and tangy, with a distinctly citrusy profile that embodies the crispness of freshly cut fruit. The aroma of lime is more intense and tart than that of its citrus counterparts like lemon or orange, providing a burst of clean, invigorating freshness that can instantly uplift the senses. The fragrance of lime is often described as bright and clear, carrying a slight sweetness that tempers its dominant sour notes. This sweet-sour interplay gives lime its unique appeal. lime also brings a touch of green, slightly bitter undertones, which adds depth and complexity to its otherwise straightforward citrus scent.

Our Quality Speaks For Itself

Fact 1

Lavender has a historical use as a natural remedy and protective herb. In ancient times, lavender was believed to ward off evil spirits and was often used in potions and sachets for protection. During the Great Plague in London in the 17th century, glove makers would perfume their leathers with lavender oil, believing it would protect them from the disease. Interestingly, those glove makers appeared to contract the plague less often than others, which might have been due to the antibacterial and antiviral properties of lavender that we recognize today. Moreover, lavender's name derives from the Latin word "lavare," which means "to wash." Romans used lavender in their baths for its fragrant properties, helping to spread its use across their empire. Lavender continues to be a beloved scent in bath and body products, celebrated for its soothing and calming effects.

Fact 2

Camphor is not only valued for its strong, aromatic properties in perfumery and medicine but also plays a significant role in Hindu religious ceremonies. It is burned in a ritual called Aarti, which is performed to purify the environment and ward off harmful spirits. The strong fragrance of burning camphor is believed to be pleasing to the gods, and its white smoke is seen as a symbol of a devotee's pure devotion and spirit. In addition to its spiritual uses, camphor was once used as a flavoring agent in food, especially in medieval Arab cuisine, thanks to its intense, aromatic flavor. However, due to its toxicity in larger quantities, its use in food has been largely discontinued. Today, camphor continues to be widely used in topical pain relievers and chest rubs for its cooling and soothing effects.
